It’s no illusion. If it seems like there are more concerts and music festivals set to take place this summer than ever before, there are.
This holds true both nationally and in San Diego. Our annual summer concert guide has grown exponentially since last year, reflecting a jump in both the number of concerts and venues here.
By any standard, the options this year are dizzying.
They range from Metallica at Petco Park and Coldplay and U2 at Qualcomm Stadium to the KAABOO Del Mar Festival, which this year features Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Muse, Pink and many more
Then there is the slew of outdoor concerts at venues large — Mattress Firm Amphitheatre, the San Diego County Fair’s Grandstand Stage — and comparatively smaller, including Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, Thornton Winery, Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU and the new Viejas Concerts in the Park in Alpine.
In between are the many intimate venues that keep music in San Diego thriving year-round, from the Casbah and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library to AMSDconcerts and Space (formerly The Hideout).
The big question now is: Will 2017 top 2016 as the most profitable year ever for concerts in North America?
The top 100 tours of 2016 sold a record 43.6 million tickets — a 4-percent increase over 2015.Those same tours accounted for a record gross in 2016 of $3.34 billion — up 7 percent from $3.12 billion in 2015, according to Pollstar magazine.
Beyoncé and the revamped Guns N’ Roses, who both performed here last year at Qualcomm Stadium, led the pack with 2016 tour earnings of $169.4 million and $130.8 million, respectively. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, who have not played in San Diego since 1982, were close behind with $122.4 million.
We’ll soon learn how this year stacks up. In the meantime, here are hundreds of summer concert options for you to consider.
