"Such persons need to be helped to establish a relationship with God that is meaningful and to work through the problem the image of father creates. "Abused persons also have more difficulty establishing good rela'tionships with other persons. If you can't trust your parents, who can you trust?" Leehan said some abuse of wives by husbands occurred because some churches and clergy still teach that "wives should be submissive to their husbands." Some women, he said, "are even told by clergy that they were abused because they were not submissive That simply is not consistent with biblical teaching about love and justice and about respecting one another, he said. One of the things clergy can try to accomplish when they deal with adults who were abused as children and who carry the scars into adulthood is to get them to understand that they were not responsible for the abuse and that they are not bad people, as many believe, he 0150 Personals, Business MOVING, local moving, low rates to south, 892-8792. "Too often the assumption is made that families are good when violence against children and against spouses is taking place," he said. "We have to make it clear as clergy and as churches that violence is not an acceptable part of marriage and that those who perpetuate it must seek help." He also said that violence was not limited to poor families but took place at every social and economic level.

Leehan said he tried to share what he had learned about family violence and how to prevent it with Greater Clevelanders both on the campuses where he works and throughout the area. Leehan will be the keynote speaker at a seminar for clergy on the problems of sexual abuse. The seminar will meet from 8:30 a.m. to noon Nov. 29 at The Temple, 1855 Ansel Rd.

Leehan has worked as a campus minister in Cleveland for 20 years. He has been a friend and pastor for most of that time to many who say they were physically and sexually abused by their parents. In -the days when students were deeply involved in the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements, he joined them in their attempts to create a more just and peaceful world. ViTalk about issues of justice, well, family violence is one of the most important," said Leehan, 50, in an interview this week in his office at the University Christian Movement in Cleveland, located in the Central YMCA, E. 22nd St.

and Prospect Ave. Leehan has been on the staff of the movement since moving to Cleveland in 1969. About 15 years ago, Leehan said, a student at Cleveland State who had been physically abused as a child came to him looking for emotional help and to find out where there was a family violence course.

she could take at CSU. There was no such course in those days, he said. So, in addition to his campus ministry duties, Leehan has been teaching classes in family violence since then, and with the cooperation of other social service and community agencies, he has run support groups each year for students who have been physically or sexually abused. Those years of experience have led Leehan to write about family violence and abuse, especially of youths. His second book on the problem, "Pastoral Care for Survivors of Family Abuse," was published this fall.

The book tries to help people recognize and deal with the longterm effects of physical and emotional abuse, he said. It is especially meant to help members of the clergy recognize the problems in the Mass and other liturgical celebrations and offering of sacraments to the people. FRENCH MONKS TO LEAD RETREAT HERE: The Brothers of Taize, a community of monks in France who are engaged in ministries of personal spiritual renewal, will hold an ecumenical religious retreat Friday and Saturday at St. Peter Catholic Church, E. 17th St.

The Taize community was founded in 1940. It has been committed to the search for peace and reconciliation around the world. One of. its first priorities was to help political refugees, mostly Jews, who were trying to escape the Nazis. The community always has refused to accept the divisions among Christians and has functioned ecumenically.

LEEHAN: "We have to make it clear that violence is not an acceptable part of marriage." of Cuyahoga Community College and Case Western Reserve Univer- RELIGION BRIEFS CZECHS RESTRICT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM: The Rev. Michael J. Lavelle, president of John Carroll University, said he discovered during a recent visit to Czechoslovakia that religious freedom there is mostly limited to attending Mass on Sunday and that the church is not permitted to become involved in attempts to influence political and social policy. Lavelle returned recently from his visit to the Eastern European nation, where he delivered an honorary doctoral degree from JCU to Cardinal Frantisek Tomasek, the 90-year-old Catholic primate in the Communist nation.

According to Lavelle, Tomasek said that he appreciated the doctorate because it provided a chance for Westerners to learn about the lack of religious freedom in Czechoslovakia. "I checked with several government and Communist Party officials about the status of freedom of religion," Lavelle said. "I was told that Catholics are free to worship on Sunday." He said priests must be licensed by the state and they are not free to engage in public ministry except CHRISTIAN SCIENCE First Church of Christ Scientist, Cleveland 2200 Overlook Rd. I Bettye A. Doty, Minister 751-2320 created for youths when they are abused by parents. Leehan, an Episcopal priest, said the crises of family violence must be dealt with by churches, synagogues and their clergy because religious institutions are familyoriented and it is often to the clergy that abused people will turn. "We must deal with violence at all levels of society, especially in the family," Leehan said. "But all too often," he said, "the abused are told that they must forgive and forget, something which is not biblical at least the forget part." Instead, Leehan said, clergy need to help victims of family violence recognize the hurt and emotional damage and 1 find ways to restore emotional health.

Abuse, he said, affects the selfesteem of victims and their ability to feel good about themselves. "If you don't feel good about yourself, it is difficult to feel good about God," he said. The concept of God as father also becomes problematical for abused people, Leehan said. "If God is a father, then what do you say to persons whose father has abused them Anglicans, Lutherans and: Reformed church brothers.
