Tony Peonio stole the show for local athletes on Day 2 of the 1B/2B/1A Track & Field Championships, Friday, at Zaepfel Stadium at Eisenhower High School.

Kalama senior Tony Peonio continues to shine on the track, taking the state championship in the pole vault for the second consecutive year by reaching 14 feet.

Peoniobeat out second-place finisher Zach Cooper of Colfax by one foot. Former Chinook Tucker Wetmore still holds the 2B state record in the pole vault at 15 feet, 5 inches.

2B Boys

Field Days

Peonio’s teammates, Jason Sanders, Riley Mazza and Sam Kalimanis all fared well in the pole vault, as well, to help the Chinooks take four of the top eight spots. Sanders took third place, reaching 12 feet, 6 inches while Mazza and Kalimanis both cleared 10 feet, 6 inches. Mazza tied for 5th whileKalimanis finished 8th

Noah White of Kalama took 4th place in the javelin, reaching 158 feet, 2 inches (PR). Toledo’s Cooper Fallon finished 15th in the finals with a throw of 124 feet, 3 inches. Colby Shamblin of Northwest Christian (Colbert) took first place, reaching 167 feet, 5 inches.

Another duo from Kalama and Toledo shined in the triple jump qualifiers.

Kalama’s Abel Koski placed seventh, reaching 40 feet, 5 inches (PR) while Toledo’s Adam Kruger took 10th with a leap of 39 feet, 6 inches. Goldendale’s Raymond Holycross took the State title, reaching 44 feet, 3 inches.

Preliminary Races

Toledo's Trevin Gale took 8th in the 200-meter race in 23.23 seconds (PR). Braydon Bayless of St. George’s took the qualifying crown with a time of 22.69 seconds (PR).

Mckenzie placed fifth in the 400-meter dash in 51.64 seconds while Gale took 10th with a time of 52.31 seconds. Winlock’s Ricky Thompson took 13th in 53.20 seconds.

In the 800-meter race, Trodahl finished ninth in 2 minutes, 3.49 seconds (PR). Ilwaco’s Jacob Mathison placed 13th in a season-best time of 2 minutes, 7.16 seconds. Kalama’s Ivan Bailey took 15th in 2 minutes, 9.66 seconds. Shawn Jones of St George's won the qualifying race with a time of 1 minute, 59.24 seconds.

Toledo’s 4x400 relay squad of Gale, Bryson Trosper, Marty and Mckenzie placed third in 3 minutes, 33.38 seconds (PR). In the same race, Winlock’s team of Thompson, Mason Ruiz, Trodahl and Xavier Sancho-Carrillo finished 13th in 3 minutes, 41.09 seconds. Reardan’s squad took the qualifying qualifying crown in 3 minutes, 31.35 seconds.

2B Girls

Field Days

In the javelin, Layni Brandhorst of Toutle Lake placed seventh, reaching 110 feet, 11 inches, Brewster’s Pepper Boesel took the crown with a throw of 136 feet (PR).

Toutle Lake’s Grace Hadaller finished 4th in the shot put, reaching 35 feet, 4.75 inches (PR). Hannah Appleford of Asotin took the State championship with a throw of 39 feet, 11.5 inches (PR).

Preliminary Races

Winlock’s Victoria Sancho placed third in the 200-meter race in 26.62 seconds (PR). Onica Chase of Toledo finished 15th in 28.69 seconds. Taking first was Davenport’s Glenna Soliday in 26.36 seconds (PR).

Chase also placed eighth in the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 3.23 seconds. Toutle Lake’s Kendal Dean took 10th in a season-best time of 1 minute, 3.87 seconds. Kalama’s Zoe Libbey finished 15th in 1 minute, 5.55 seconds. Cle Elum/Roslyn’s Nellie Nicholls took first in 59.62 seconds.

In the 800-meter race, Toledo’s Haylee Wolfe took 11th in 2 minutes 31.38 seconds (PR).

Kalama’s 4x100 relay squad of Libbey, Lilly Hostetter, Sienna DiCristina and Abbott placed seventh in 53.02 seconds (PR). Brewster’s team took the qualifying crown in 51.33 seconds.

Kalama’s 4x200 relay squad of Zoe Libbey, Hostetter, Josie Brandenburg and Abbott placed ninth in 1 minute, 53.25 seconds (PR). The Toutle Lake team of Avery Ruelas, Madelyn Ranta-Bratz, Lainey Dean and Kendal Dean ran the event in 1 minute, 54.30 seconds (PR), good for 12th place. The St. George's relay team took the qualifying crown in 1 minute, 49.44 seconds (PR).

Toledo’s 4x400 relay squad of Wolfe, Jasmine Kemmerer, Ava Good and Chase finished 4th in 4 minutes, 21.94 seconds (PR). Meanwhile, Toutle Lake’s team of Lainey Dean, Sophia Spinneberg, Jazmine Kuhn, Kendal Dean finished 5th in 4 minutes 26.22 seconds (PR). The Kalama squad of McKenzie Lamvik, Libbey, Josie Brandenburg and Nesbitt placed 8th in 4 minutes, 30.27 seconds (PR). But it was Rainier (WA) that set the preliminary pace in 4 minutes, 18.38 seconds.

1B Boys

Field Day

For the 1B Boys, Naselle’s Derek Suomela took fourth in the high jump, reaching 5 feet, 8 inches. Mary M. Knight’s Logan Green took first with a jump of 6 feet (PR).

Suomela also placed 11th in the long jump with a jump of 18 feet, 2 inches. Taking 1st was Mt. Vernon Christian’s Jaxon Silver in 20 feet, 0.75 inches.

Preliminary Races

Suomela placed third in the 400-meter dash in 52.24 seconds to qualify for the finals. Pearce Hess of Grace Academy took 1st in 50.54 seconds.

Suomela also took 12th in the 800-meter race in 2 minutes, 9.59 seconds. Taking first in that race was Garfield-Palouse’s Brendan Snekvik in 2 minutes, 1.86 seconds.

Naselle’s 4x100 relay squad of Jacob Pakenen, Jason Gardner, Andy Rosas and Gus Burkhalter placed 14th in 48.50 seconds (PR). Orcas Island took first in 45.64 seconds.

1B Girls

Field Day

For the 1B Girls, Naselle’s Mylee Dunagan took sixth in the triple jump, reaching 33 feet, 2.75 inches (PR). Her teammate June Miller finished 11th at 31 feet, 11.5 inches. Taking first was Mary Walker’s Tamia Cates, reaching 36 feet, 8.5 inches.

Preliminary Races

Naselle's June Miller placed fourth in the 200-meter dash in 26.91 seconds (PR). Pacific Christian Academy’s Ruthie Dodge took the qualifying crown in 26.69 seconds (PR).

June Miller also took second for the Comets in the 400-meter race in 1 minute, 1.09 seconds (PR). She was beat out by Emily Wilson of Willapa Valley, who finished with a time of 1 minute 0.57 seconds.

Halle Miller placed 10th in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.33 seconds. Odessa’s Hayden Schuh took 1st in 16.16 seconds.

1A Boys

Preliminary Races

For Castle Rock, Ryker Heller took 10th in the 200-meter race in 22.89 seconds while Meridian’s Jase Klinkhammer took the qualifying crown in 21.41 seconds.

The Rockets’ 4x100 relay team of Ian Burton, Stephen Ibsen, Thatcher Heller, and Ryker Heller placed fourth in 43.76 seconds (PR). Meridian’s squad of Josh Elmer, Jase Klinkhammer, Caleb Young, Kasey Brennan took 1st in 43.19 seconds (PR).

The Castle Rock 4x400 relay team of Dionicio Guzman-Curz, Cash Cuellar, Burton and Thatcher Heller placed 8th in 3 minutes, 31.39 seconds. The Seattle Academy team won the qualifier in 3 minutes, 24.65 seconds.

1A Girls

Preliminary Races

For the Castle Rock girls, Casie Kleine took third place in the 200-meter dash in 26.09 seconds (PR). Taking first was Braelyn Baker of Bear Creek in 23.54 seconds.

Kleine was even better in the 400-meter race where she was runner up in 58.17 seconds. Shaela Bradley of La Center took 1st in 57.97 seconds.

The Rockets’ 4x100 relay squad of Valerie Shetler, Kleine, Myah Manzano and Gracie Sibbett placed 6th in 50.99 seconds. Zilla’s team took the qualifying crown in 49.94 seconds.

Castle Rock’s 4x400 team of Myah Manzano, Kaitlyn Meyers, Sibbett and Kleine took fourth in 4 minutes, 8.64 seconds. Seattle Academy placed first in 4 minutes, 7.52 seconds.

The state championships wrapped up on Saturday in Yakima.
